How My Design Goes Straight to Hell

Friday, January 14, 2011

I saw a very funny post on TheOatmeal.com before, saying about how a web design goes straight to hell because of the client. You can view it here if you want. Now this is my version according to my experience. Well, I really met some terrible clients who drive me crazy all the time. A terrible client can just drag me straight into the hell and normally their case is never gonna ended due to endless amendment, that is really killing me!

And this is how my design goes straight to hell in order to satisfy a client's requests:

1. The first design that I came out with, it's simple and tidy.

2. Later on I got the feedback saying that it's too plain, so I added in some floral decoration.

3. Update feedback: "I think it's better to insert the contact of our company such as address, telephone number and email add."

(Alright, no prob, that's not a big deal. It still looks fine so far.)

4. Update feedback: "Can you please adjust a little bit of the object? I don't want it to be covered by anything. I think it will be perfect if you can add in a location map for us. Oh ya, add in our business operation hour as well if you don't mind."

(Hahaha... Of course not, that will be fine, I will just do it for you. Oh dammit, seems like it's not that fine.)

5. So after several amendment done... Feedback: "Oh sorry miss, my boss was saying that Chinese New Year is coming soon, so can you please like amend a little bit of the theme? Like put in some Chinese elements."

(Fuuu... What the hell?! That's not a LITTLE BIT changes, a**! Nevermind, I'll do it for you, customer is always right. Satisfying customer is important.)

6. Again. Feedback: "My boss said that it's a little too plain and dull (WTF!), so can you please add in some errrr... something like ermmm... ( Me: Like pattern or Background?) Oh ya ya, that's just what I thought, so can you please put in some background to fill up the space please?"

(Noooo! I shouldn't have told her about that. I can't believe this design came out from me. Noooo! No way, this is so not my style.)

7. Feedback: (No, kill me please!) "Miss, my boss was still saying that it's too plain and there are still some empty spaces to fill up. Can you please fill up those spaces with any elements related to the theme?"

(Hahaha! Ya, sure. Hahaha! So I got what you mean now, just mess it up! That's the best way. Hahaha! Here, I got this. And there, I got that. And voila!)

8. Feedback: "Ahhh... That's just what I wanted. Perfect! But it will be better if you can add in..."

(No!!! F*** you! #*@you@#$bla%&*blo@#bluf$%*bla!)

P/S: All these designs and conversation created are not real, it's just an example, just for fun.

Anyway, that's just basically what is going on to my design. Sometimes, client's requests are just so ridiculous and yet you still have to do it for them. There are 2 types of client which I hate and afraid the most: 1 is the terrible ridiculous customer with endless requests and amendment just like what I mentioned above; another 1 is the client who think that a designer is like a superman who can do anything they want, they'll just throw you some little information including some poor quality photos expecting you to do a very high quality design for them.

I still have a terrible case on hand right now which is not yet solved for around 3 months. The client wanted me to do a newspaper ads for them with a white theme at first, so I gave them an angelic theme. After that, they wanted me to change it to Christmas theme since it was coming soon. Due to endless complaint and amendment, of course the work was not ready to be output even Christmas was about to end. And then, they want me to change the theme again, this time was a romantic theme with wedding. Only after I done it, they told me that Chinese New Year is around the corner so they wanted me to change it again. So I just did it for them, AGAIN. But then, I just received the feedback just now saying that they want the ads to be advertise-able during the common time, not only during Chinese New Year and thus want me to amend again. So can you imagine, a simple newspaper ads took us around 3 months time to go through with it and all the works done previously were all miscarried because of their fucking picky behaviour. I think they deserve the middle fingers, pissed me off all the time!

However, I appreciate this job because I'm doing what I like now. I really learned a lot from here and I'm lucky enough to have a kind boss. He didn't even scold me when I printed a work in 100 pcs only then to find out I was wrong, that's not a joke seriously.

I know it's been a really long time since the last post because I've been quite busy lately especially when Chinese New Year is coming soon, but I'm not gonna explain the reasons why am busy because they'll become "alasan" (means excuse). LOL. This is my first post in 2011, so Happy New Year to all of you, since I never greet yet. =P That's all, till the next time. Adios! =)

*Never gonna be done
See, this is why I steered away from graphic design. Drawing is fun but I don't like to be told what to do.

@freezingheat: Yeap, I hate it too. I like this job, only the client is making me headache. Anyway, thanks for visiting my blog. =)
